Custom Notifications

Custom Notifications are an uncomplicated way to set rules that alert one or more recipients to the presence of a specific Dose Reading field value or a specific value threshold breach and are checked as Dose Report are imported. Custom Notifications are rules driven and use SMTP email if setup, to deliver a predefined message.

Custom Notifications allow the construction of a formula like a macro for data matching specific conditions which are checked as it Dose Readings are imported.

Adding or Changing a Custom Notification

Custom Notifications are added or maintained in the Custom Notifications list which is access via the Custom button in the Dosimetry tab. An example new Custom Notification is provided here;

 Note: selection of the Dose Report Type is easily overlooked. The Dose Report Type is important when defining a Custom Notification, because it determines which set of Dose Reading fields are available for data rules (Field Criteria) in the new Custom Notification.

A Custom Notification may have multiple Criteria but they are all based on one Dose Report Type only. If multiple Dose Report Types uses and different content rules apply then multiple Custom Notifications will need to be recorded.

Custom Notification Saved

Once the main details of the Custom Notification have been recorded and the new entry is Saved the Fields and Criteria Add and Delete buttons and the Send Test Email button become available;

                                                                                              Add Rule                             Send Test Email

Adding Field Criteria

A Custom Notification requires at least one Field Criterion to be added in order to function. Field Criteria are added by clicking the small Add button below the Fields and Criteria list, shown above.

A Field Criterion is a data rule and requires selecting the applicable Dose Reading field and entry of either a Notification Numeric Threshold or Notification on Presence of text a rule parameter. The Dose Reading fields available are based on the Dose Report Type selection that was made in the Custom Notification Details tab as note above.

                                                                                      Fields Available Depend on Dose Report Type selection

Historion will not accept both criteria for the same field, it must be an entry in only one or the other.

Data Rules Listed

Data Rules that have been recorded are listed in the Data Rules table as shown below, Rules can be removed after selection if required by selecting the Rule and clicking the delete button below the lower left corner of the list. Note that at least one Data Rule is required for the Custom Notification to work.

An existing Data Rule can be edited if the Custom Notification tab is in Edit Mode.

Data Rules are Strictly Inclusive

Adding multiple Data Rules to the same Custom Notification creates increasingly strict data filtering rules for the Custom Notification to be triggered.

  Data Rules are not treated as OR conditions, they are treated as strictly inclusive meaning that for the Custom Notification to detect Readings matching rules specified all Data Rules specified in the Custom Notification must be met for the Custom Notification to be triggered.

If OR conditions are considered required, then separate Custom Notifications must be recorded with their own specific Data Rule(s).

Future releases of Historion are planned which will allow combinations of AND with OR conditions to be specified across the set of Data Rules used for a Custom Notification.

If the functionality offered by the Custom Notification feature is simple by design. If this is too limited or not meeting a given requirement there are similar and more sophisticated options available (also by Dose Application and not just Dose Report Type) in the Dose Alerts feature.

Futures: further mathematical operators for data checks especially OR within same notification will be added. Improvements are also planned for email addresses to be integrated with various common email address book types (such as Microsoft Outlook and Gmail) and with the Historion Contact list introduced with Dose Automation.

Performing an SMTP Email Test

At the lower right corner of the Custom Notification Details tab is a Send Test Email button.  This is provided to ensure that the SMTP Server setup in the System Settings is working correctly and email addresses have been recorded for recipients of the currently viewed Custom Notification correctly.

When the Send Test Email button is clicked the following message prompts for confirmation;

If Yes is selected a confirmation is displayed and the test message is sent;

How does the Test SMTP Email Read?

An example Test SMTP Email is shown below;

Who Receives the Test SMTP Email?

All recipients in to the To and CC email fields of the custom Notification receive the Test Email.

How are multiple email recipients specified?

Multiple email recipients can be specified in the To and CC fields by separating the email addresses with a semi colon character.

How does a Custom Notification look in Email?

The Subject line of the email is per the Subject Line provided in the Custom Notification setup.

The Message Body of the email that is sent when a Custom Notification has been trigged includes the Message Body details recorded in the setup of the Custom Notification and two additional lines at the bottom of the Message Body as shown below;

Futures: the email message (above) generated by a triggered Custom Notification will have the Dose Reading ID and Dose Report ID replaced with other data enough to allow the Reading to be found in Historion. A new Dose Indicator status icon will be added to represent a detected custom notification.
